Welcome! If you're reading this, you're probably curious about these animals and perhaps wondering if snake ownership is right for you. Snakes make wonderful pets for the right person. They're quiet, clean (relatively), and fun to observe. Whether you're drawn to their movement, scale patterns, or low-maintenance lifestyle, this site will guide you through the basics of snake husbandry. Let us begin this journey together and learn what it takes to provide a happy, healthy home for your pet! Keep in mind, because I cannot account for every species of snake because their requirements are different, I will be providing instructions for a ball python which is one of the most common species of snake to keep. (Target audience: prospective snake owners who are completely new to the field)
Why Snakes Make Good Pets
Snakes are fundamentally misunderstood creatures that deserve respect and admiration just like a cat or dog would warrant. Unlike traditional pets, they don't require daily walks, constant attention, annoying playtime, or loud barks. A well-cared-for snake can live for 15-30 years, making them extremely well-lasting companions. They're perfect for people with allergies since they have no fur or dander. Their simple diet and minimal space requirements make them ideal for apartment living or busy lifestyles. And if you want a more hands on animal, you can indeed handle it and allow it out. They are relatively harmless (depending on the species) and even like to climb on you due to your warmth.
Is a Snake Right for You?
Before recklessly starting, consider these important factors. Can you handle feeding frozen-thawed rodents? Does any of this scare you? Are you prepared for the initial setup costs of $200-500 (which is still cheaper than most dogs or cats)? Do you have space for a proper enclosure (at least 40 gallons for most beginner species)? Most importantly, are you committed to 20+ years of care? Snakes are escape artists, so secure housing is essential. They also require specific temperature and humidity levels to thrive, meaning you'll need to monitor their environment regularly. BUt fret not, there are plenty of tools you can use. It is easier than ever to care for this animal.
